Alexis Hampton had been working in a restaurant, but her pay was very unpredictable. In fact, if the restaurant had a slow night, sometimes she wouldn’t get paid at all. After having a daughter, Alexis decided she needed to find a career field that would be more stable so that she could help provide for her family. Both of her parents worked in the healthcare field, and she felt a career in healthcare might offer her the stability she was looking for.

“My father worked in hospitals and my mother was a Certified Nurse’s Aide. I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field, but I just didn’t know where to start,” explains Alexis. Alexis looked to her sister, who had recently graduated from the Harris School of Business, and had begun working and saving money. “This made me feel like I could to it too,” said Alexis, and so she decided to enroll in the Professional Medical Assistant program at the Cherry Hill campus.

    Program: Health Claims Specialist

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I was working a good job as a bank teller, where I handled customer service and other administrative responsibilities. But I have a progressive disease called spinal muscular atrophy that weakens your muscles. I realized that I could no longer be in a job that required me to stand all day. I needed to find a career that I could do while seated. The Health Claims Specialist program is a good fit, because it will allow me to continue to use my customer service and clerical skills. Most jobs in medical billing and coding are desk jobs, which should work out well for me.

What do you enjoy about the Harris School?
The curriculum in the medical billing and coding classes is very thorough. We are learning materials that we can apply directly in the real world. I am also learning so much about anatomy and physiology that I can finally talk to my own doctors and physical therapists in their own language.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I was in between jobs, and was tired of changing from job to job. I wanted a steady career that I could stay in for at least 10 years or more. A friend convinced me that it was time to call the Harris School, and within two days, I was here filling out an application.

What do you enjoy about the Harris School?
The teachers at the Harris School are very supportive, and they try to help you get through the courses. The students are supportive too. They remind you not to give up.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I wanted a career in a high-demand field, and I believe that the field of healthcare is a good field, because people will always need healthcare. I had tried Atlantic Cape Community College, but I didn’t feel that college was for me. So I came in for my interview and tour, and decided that the Pharmacy Technician program would be a good choice, because of the options it offers, such as retail, hospital, or even marketing work. I also like knowing I’m in a field that is going to help people.

What do you enjoy about the Harris School?
The class sizes in the Pharm Tech program are relatively small here, so you get to do more hands-on work, and you get more in-depth training from the teachers. I have also liked learning about medicine, and the effects and reactions that it causes in the human body. That’s something I never thought about before coming to the Harris School, but now I think it is very interesting.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I was at community college in a nursing program, but needed to take a year off, and that’s when I started thinking that I could complete a program at the Harris School in less than one year. This way I would be ready to start a career in the healthcare field in a shorter period of time. I still plan to continue my nursing education, but this will allow me to get started sooner in the workplace.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I had been a stay-at-home mom, and when my daughter turned five, I decided it was time for something new. I heard about the Harris School through a friend, and at first I wanted to be a dental assistant. But I eventually chose the Multi-Skilled Health Technician program because it exposes me to such a large variety of clinical skills. I love to do hands-on work, and the MST program is the perfect way to learn a wide range of skills.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
Before coming to Harris I had worked several different jobs, and I had hit a point where I was unemployed and looking for work. I also was raising my 2-year-old son, and wanted to get started on a more stable career path. An advisor at the unemployment office suggested that I further my education, and I happened to notice an ad for the Harris School on TV. I called, and the next day I came in for an appointment.

Up until then, when I thought about going back to school, I was worried about finding the right career choice and how to afford an education. I knew I wanted a job where I could help others, and where I got to be active and hands-on. I knew I did not want a desk job. When I visited the Harris School, I realized that the Multi-Skilled Health Technician program was a really good match with what I wanted in a career. Plus, the financial aid advisors helped me do research on grants and loans that were available to me, and as a result, I was able to enroll!

I graduated from high school, and almost two years later, I was working a job at Burger King but this was not the secure career that I wanted. Listening to the radio, I heard an ad for the Harris School of Business. Since I would like to someday become a nurse, I thought Harris School’s Medical Assistant program could be a good stepping stone for me. Later, I looked at the school’s website and called to make an appointment with the admissions department. I enrolled to start school the following month.

Why did you decide to come to the Harris School?
I had taken a few physical therapy courses at a four-year college, but it was a long program, and I wanted to get started in the workforce sooner. I was working part-time at Cadbury Senior Services in the dietary department, and I was able to keep that job in the evenings, and still attend classes at the Harris School. With the Surgical Technician program, I am going to be able to start my career in less than one year’s time, in a field that is rewarding and meaningful.

Why did you decide to come to Harris?
After high school, I knew I wanted my career to be in the healthcare field. At first I thought I wanted to pursue nursing. But my first job after high school was at Lowes, where I gained some experience with administrative responsibilities. That’s when I started to think that I might like administrative work more than clinical work,  but I knew I still wanted to be in the healthcare field. I heard about the Harris School through a friend who was doing the Medical Assistant training program. My friend told me about medical billing and coding training, and how being a Health Claims Specialist was a way to have an administrative position in a healthcare setting. So it was the perfect fit.

Why did you decide to come to Harris?
I had already been working in the field of medical billing and coding when I started thinking about going back to school. I was working at Independence Blue Cross, where I did provider services and researched claims. But I wasn't certified. I knew I could do better if I got more training and then went on to take the certification exam. Getting certified would prepare me for a job with higher responsibilities and better pay.

Why did you decide to come to Harris?
One day I was dropping my fiance’s daughter off at the Cherry Hill Mall, and I saw some students walking around in medical scrubs that said “Harris School of Business.” So I went home and looked it up, and saw that the Harris School offered several programs in the field of healthcare.

I knew that I enjoyed helping other people. I have volunteered for nine years as a firefighter with the Westhampton Fire Department, and also served for four years in the U.S. Army. With a mother who is an EMT and a father who is a firefighter, helping other people is in my blood. I had worked as an EMT in the past, and was currently working to get my EMT certification renewed when I started wondering if the Harris School might be a good choice for me. The more I learned about the medical assistant program, the more it seemed like a good idea, so I decided to enroll.

Why did you decide to come to Harris?
Before coming to Harris, I had started taking classes in early childhood education at college, but early on, I realized that this was not the career for me. I heard about the Harris School of Business through a friend, and started thinking about a career in healthcare. When I looked back on my life, I realized how much doctors and nurses had done for me, and I thought it was time for me to give back. So I signed up for the Medical Assistant program.

What do you enjoy about the Harris School?
When I was at college, sometimes I felt like I was just a number. There were large lecture halls where the professors weren’t able to get to know any of the students by name. Because the classes were so large, students weren’t held accountable for showing up to class. But here at Harris, everyone knows who you are. Teachers get to know you, and expect you to work hard. We are close to the other students in our class, and we even get to know the people in the classes that are one cycle ahead of us or behind us.

I did some research on the school and found that Harris has a great reputation and a high percentage of graduates as well as job placements. It also doesn’t take long to complete the programs, so that was a benefit too.

What do you enjoy about the Harris School?
I like the hands-on exercises and the trips we take to job fairs and seminars. I like that the instructors are understanding and patient. I also like the fact that Harris sets you up with an externship prior to graduation.

Charmaine Worrell remembers her childhood in Trinidad fondly, especially the time she spent with her mother. She and her mother believed in the healing powers of touch, and would often give each other massages to ease any stiffness or aches. Charmaine never dreamed at the time that massage therapy could become her career.

When she was in her 20’s, Charmaine left Trinidad and began building a life in the U.S. Her family was growing, and she kept herself very busy as a mother to four sons and one daughter. As her children got older, she decided it was time to pursue her career dreams. But at this point, she still did not consider massage therapy as an option.

Why did you decide to come to Harris?
After I was medically retired from the U.S. Navy, my family and I moved back to New Jersey. Starting over and looking for a new career was very intimidating for both me and my wife, who is also a Navy veteran. I was 34 years old and wasn’t sure what the next step should be. My wife took the “leap” first and signed up for the Medical Assistant program at the Harris School of Business. She graduated and found a great high paying career almost immediately.

Although the G.I. Bill would pay for a four-year college for me, I chose to enter Harris’s Health Claims Specialist program for medical billing and coding training. I completed the program and earned a certification. Now I am enrolled in the Computerized Accounting Technology program, and I will have finished two programs, in the same/related careers, in only one year--as opposed to taking four years to finish my education--at roughly half the cost!

I went to the meeting with her, and I realized this could be a second career opportunity for me too. Believe it or not, I ended up signing up too!” says Theresa.

But over the years, she witnessed the fast-paced demands of a changing industry, and decided it was time to move on.

“I realized that sometimes with all of the pressures of the modern world, we can fall out of touch with what is important in life,” says Dana. “I decided to pursue a career that promotes wellness and renewal, and massage therapy seemed to be the perfect fit. In this world of technology and busy schedules, we forget how important human touch is.”
