The Cherry Hill campus of the Harris School welcomes new students
If you are looking for a medical billing and coding school in South Jersey, you have two great options. The Harris School of Business operates schools in Cherry Hill and Voorhees where students can enroll in the Health Claims Specialist Plus program. Here are our Frequently Asked Questions about this career-focused program.
What do Health Claims Specialists do?
Health claims specialists are trained in medical billing and coding. These professionals are responsible for assigning special codes to procedures and diagnoses. They also process health insurance claims and ensure that medical providers are paid for their services.
How do I become a medical biller or coder?
At the Harris School, you can get trained in the field of medical billing and coding in less than one year. No prior experience is required. Students are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, and to complete our admissions process. Like all post-secondary education, you need to be dedicated to your school work, maintain good attendance, do your homework, and pass your exams in order to complete the program.
What will I learn in medical billing and coding school?
The program at the Harris School starts out with basic courses in keyboarding and financial literacy. Then the courses move into career-focused classes such as:
- Introduction to Insurance
- Medical Terminology
- Billing and Coding Forms
- Collection and Reimbursement Concepts
- Electronic Health Records
- Computerized Billing
- Medical Coding
Students will also learn how to use the standard coding systems called the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and Current Procedural Terminology. The instructors at the Harris School are here for our students, and want to help students find success in their coursework.
How long does the program take to complete?
Most students can complete the program in less than one year, assuming they stay on top of their course work. The Harris School is so proud of the Health Claims Specialist students at our Voorhees and Cherry Hill locations. It makes us so happy to see students come in the door on the first day with no knowledge of the field, and then just one quick year later, see them graduate with the career skills they need to work as a medical biller or coder.
How do I apply for the program?
Our application process is simple. The first step is to contact us online. An admissions representative will contact you to explain how the process works. Students are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to apply. We also have a Financial Aid department that can help you navigate what you need to do to apply for aid.
