Getting medical assistant training could be in your future
The Harris School of Business is proud to be located in Dover, Delaware. As the state’s capital, Dover is an important city to be in! From the Speedway and Dover Downs to the art museum and stately government buildings, there is always something going on in Dover.
At the Harris School, we are committed to serving the residents of Delaware with career-focused education. In today’s economy, we want to prepare students with the marketable skills they need to enter the workforce. One of the programs our students enjoy is the Professional Medical Assistant training program.
What is a Medical Assistant? A medical assistant is a healthcare professional who may work in a doctor’s office, hospital, nursing home, clinic, outpatient center, or other healthcare specialty center. Medical assistants are responsible for assisting the doctors and nursing staff with a range of tasks such as greeting patients, setting up exam rooms, taking patient histories, measuring patient vital signs, and supporting front office activities.
Four benefits of medical assistant training
People choose to become medical assistants for many different reasons. But most of them share one thing in common: the desire to help others. If you are considering going back to school, consider some of the benefits of this program.
1. You can be trained as a medical assistant in less than one year
A four-year college is not for everyone. Some people are not interested in the investment of time and money necessary to complete a 4-year degree. At the Harris School, all of the programs are accelerated learning programs that can typically be completed in less than one year. No prior experience is required. Just a high school diploma (or equivalent) and a willingness to learn! Our Dover campus offers full-time day classes as well as a part-time evening option.
2. A positive job outlook
In an uncertain economy, it’s important to look for job fields that are predicted to grow. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, medical assisting is one of these fields. The handbook says, “Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 23 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.” The handbook predicts that the aging of the baby-boom population will cause an increase in demand for medical services in general, and this will in turn contribute to job growth for medical assistants.
3. Financial aid may be available if you are eligible
One of the reasons that some people are worried about going to school is the cost. But before you get discouraged, take the time to see if you are eligible for financial aid. You may find that a one-year career-focused program is a possibility for you. At the Harris School in Dover, we have Financial Aid advisors who will help you navigate the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process. We don’t want finances to stand in the way of your education, and we want to help you find a way to make it work.
4. A great start in the healthcare field
Working in the healthcare industry is a respectable career path. As a medical assistant, you will help doctors and nurses serve patients more effectively. You will work directly with patients, and help them with their concerns and questions. You will be doing work that contributes to the overall health of your community. Now that is something to be proud of!
Many medical assistants are happy with their career as it is. They find it rewarding to work with patients and enjoy the day-to-day responsibilities of the job. Others decide they want to use their training as a stepping stone toward nursing school. Others like the administrative tasks, and decide they want to pursue a medical office administration career. Whatever your journey, the chance to work in the field of healthcare is one of the important benefits of becoming a medical assistant.
