Harris Students Join Bone Marrow Registry

Upper Darby, PA. The Upper Darby campus of the Harris School of Business is committed to helping others. This February, over 50 students and faculty signed up for the National Marrow Donor Program.

Joining a bone marrow registry is the first step in becoming a bone marrow donor. Bone marrow transplants require a genetic match between the donor and patient. The Registry tests and keeps track of its members’ HLA tissue type. With this genetic information, the registry can match patients with potential donors. Bone marrow transplants can help treat over 50 diseases including leukemia, sickle cell anemia, severe combined immune deficiency, and aplastic anemia.

In April, Harris students reached out again. This time, they rolled up their sleeves to participate in the campus’s annual American Red Cross blood drive. “Working in the allied health specialties helps us realize how important it is to help those in poor health,” explains Crystal Williams, Registrar at the Upper Darby campus. “We want to thank all of the students and staff who participated. A small effort like donating a pint of blood can safe a life.”

Supporting the efforts of the American Red Cross and the National Marrow Donor Program are just a few of the many ways that Harris seeks to make a difference.

Harris School of Business has a tradition of providing career-focused education to adults in the fields of allied health and business management. The Upper Darby campus offers medical assistant programs and dental assistant training.
