Don’t look now, but job training in Wilmington, Delaware, has just turned purple. If you were to visit the Wilmington campus of the Harris School of Business this March, you might notice a lot of students and staff wearing purple. That’s the color of the March of Dimes campaign to support the families of premature babies.

Each March, the Harris School in Wilmington kicks off the March of Dimes fundraiser, and at the same time, teaches its students the importance of giving back to the community. “By holding community involvement activities, we help to show our students that the Harris School is more than career training. We believe that part of being a successful professional is contributing to your community,” says Phil Hooks, campus director.

The campus raises money through its March of Dimes wall, where students and staff can contribute money and post a donation card. Students may also find that getting job training in Wilmington can help them get in shape. Both staff and students participate in the walk-a-thon called the “March to Help Babies.” The walk-a-thon raises money for three main purposes: to help women have healthy full-term pregnancies, to support the families of premature babies, and to fund research to help prevent premature births.

Each year, students and staff form teams, wear their purple shirts, and lace up their walking shoes on the day of the walk. According to the March of Dimes, more than half a million babies are born prematurely each year. The organization has been holding the walk-a-thon since 1970, attracting nearly 7 million walkers each year.
