Great Ways to Exercise this Summer

It’s summertime and a great time to get in shape! The daylight hours are nice and long, the weather is warm, and there is so much to do! If you are stuck in a rut and not enjoying your exercise, or if you find you’re skipping your workouts, maybe it’s time for a change of pace. When’s the last time you tried a new form of exercise? This summer may be the time for you. Consider some of these great ideas to liven up your workout time.

Exercise with friends
Instead of meeting friends for a coffee or a drink, meet up for exercise. Whether it’s running, hiking, biking, lifting, or just a casual walk, it’s always more fun when you are with friends! To make it extra fun, try forming a team for a road race or a charity walk. You can really build friendships and get in shape by exercising together.

Don’t underestimate the power (and fun) of dance exercise
While it may sound like more play than work, dancing can give you a great cardio workout! Many exercise disciplines have been structured around the notion of dance. Try one out and see what you think. Choose from Zumba, jazzercise, hip hop, ballet barre, and more.

Get trendy
It seems like every year there’s a new exercise craze. Why not join the trend and try the latest? See if you can find a class you’ve never tried before, like anti-gravity yoga, Soul cycle, pure Barre, orange theory, high intensity interval training, or gyrotonic.

Enjoy the great outdoors
The long summer days give you plenty of time after school or work to get some fitness in. Simple options are running, hiking, or biking. For the more adventurous, try rock climbing, rowing, obstacle runs, or ultimate Frisbee.

Too hot to leave the house?
If the dog days of summer make you want to stay inside the air conditioning, don’t worry…there’s still plenty you can do. Exercise DVDs, streaming exercise shows, or exercise games on your console are three great ways that you can turn your screen time into exercise time.

Club sports
Were you ever in a team sport in middle school or high school? Team sports can be so much fun that you don’t even realize you are exercising. See if there is a soccer league in your area. Some communities even have volleyball, kickball, and other fun team sports. You might be able to re-live your glory days on the field!

Boot camps
Do you need extreme motivation? Boot camp trainers are there to get you working, and the peer pressure from the others in the group will be sure to get you in shape.

Set goals
One way to keep yourself motivated and committed to your exercise is to set achievable goals. For instance, you might set a weight loss target. Or you might sign up for a race and try to lower your time from the last race. Signing up for a fun event like an obstacle course or mud run with a group of friends is also a great target to set. Doing a walk-a-thon for a good cause can have the benefit of helping others while getting yourself in shape too.

Whatever you do, don’t forget the importance of keeping regular exercise in your life. Exercise helps you feel better, look better, and lead a healthier life. You will thank yourself for doing it!
