About the Region

Located just outside of Philadelphia, the nation’s sixth largest metropolitan area, Upper Darby, PA, was first settled in 1653, and the township was formed by Quakers in 1736.

Reflecting its Quaker beginnings, Upper Darby was active in the antislavery movement. Many homes in the area were stops on the Underground Railroad.  The business district is noted for many fine examples of Art Deco style buildings. The Upper Darby Performing Arts Center produces one of the nation’s most successful youth theater programs, with more than 35 performances each summer involving over 700 young people.
