The Pharmacy Technician Program at Harris School

The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students for a rewarding career in a hospital or a community pharmacy. From the beginning, you will be engaged in medical and educational courses that provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to become a pharmacy technician.

Course Title What this Course Is About
Introduction to Pharmacy Practice The course will discuss different settings that hire pharmacy technicians and what is expected of you at each setting. You will learn about new drug development and the role of the pharmacy technician in drug procurement.
 
Pharmacology I and II You will learn about anatomy, physiology, and the principles of drug action. Major categories of drugs are discussed, with an emphasis on the 50 most frequently prescribed medicines.
 
Pharmacology Community Practice This course focuses on community pharmacies. You will learn pharmacy software, the top 100 drugs, prescription interpreting, inventory control procedures, and record-keeping.
 
IV Admixture & Aseptic Technique I and II These courses focus on hospital-based settings where IV drugs are administered. You will learn about maintaining sterility as well as the preparation of cardiac drugs, antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other IV pharmaceuticals.

The curriculum emphasizes pharmacology, the business environment, communications skills, and human relations to help students develop the level of professionalism required in the health and wellness community. The courses, combined with the externship program, provide students with the foundation they need to begin a successful career.
