Legal Office Technology as a Career

Types of Jobs in Legal Office Technology

As a legal office professional, you will become a member of a demanding and high-energy legal team. You might take on a number of roles, or specialize in a particular area. Here are some of the types of jobs you might undertake:

Legal Secretary/Assistant

Because of the specialized nature of their work, legal secretaries and assistants need to know technical terminology and processes. As a legal office professional, you will work with either an attorney or a paralegal to prepare legal papers such as summonses, motions, and subpoenas. You will work closely with legal correspondence. You might also assist with legal research. When new lawyers join your office, you may need to train them on how to prepare documents for court.

Executive Legal Secretary/Assistant

If you are hired or promoted to executive secretary or assistant, you will be more involved in managing information, providing support for the executives of your company. You might arrange conference calls, supervise other clerical workers, and review correspondence or reports to determine their level of priority and to whom these should be distributed. You might work with members of committees and boards to set up meetings, preparing materials for these high-level meetings as well.

The Professional Setting

As a legal office professional, you will be working primarily in an office setting, ranging from:

  • Law offices
  • Judiciary offices
  • Management companies
  • Colleges and universities
  • Local and state government
